    A simple deterministic self-organized critical system

    We introduce a new continuous cellular automaton that presents self-organized criticality. It is one-dimensional, totally deterministic, without any kind of embedded randomness, not even in the initial conditions. This system is in the same universality class as the Oslo rice pile system, boundary driven interface depinning and the train model for earthquakes.     The development of an enterprise resource planning system (ERP) for a research and technology institute: the case of the Nuclear and energy research institute - IPEN

    This paper reports the history of the development of an enterprise resource planning (ERP) dedicated to managing the technical activities of the Nuclear and Energy Research Institute, a governmental research and technology institute in Brazil. After the implementation of the new planning process, the development of a new management information system named SIGEPI was immediately initiated. The implementation of this system followed a strategy of integrating databases already available and developing new ones in order to facilitate the data collecting process and to improve the quality and the reliability of these data. This paper describes the evolution of SIGEPI, its main features and it also reports the difficulties faced for almost ten years of developments. The success factors of the case were classified into three groups: strategic, technical and behavioral ones. The impact of these factors and recommendation for future similar developments are presented

    Chaos and Synchronized Chaos in an Earthquake Model

    We show that chaos is present in the symmetric two-block Burridge-Knopoff model for earthquakes. This is in contrast with previous numerical studies, but in agreement with experimental results. In this system, we have found a rich dynamical behavior with an unusual route to chaos. In the three-block system, we see the appearance of synchronized chaos, showing that this concept can have potential applications in the field of seismology.Comment: To appear in Physical Review Letters (13 pages, 6 figures

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>To identify all the records within the Brazilian Hospital Information System (HIS) that contained information suggestive of severe maternal morbidity (near miss); to describe the diagnoses and procedures used; to identify variables associated with maternal death.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A descriptive population study with data from the HIS and Mortality Information System (MIS) files of records of women during pregnancy, delivery and in the postpartum period in all the capital cities of the Brazilian states in 2002. Initially, records of women between 10 and 49 years of age were selected; next, those records with at least one criterion suggestive of near miss were selected. For the linkage of HIS with MIS and HIS with itself, a blocking strategy consisting of three independent steps was established. In the data analysis, near miss ratios were calculated with corresponding 95% confidence interval and the diagnoses and procedures were described; a multiple logistic regression model was adjusted. Primary and secondary diagnoses and the requested and performed procedures during hospitalization were the main outcome measures.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The overall maternal near miss ratio was 44.3/1,000 live births. Among the records indicating near miss, 154 maternal deaths were identified. The criteria of severity most frequently found were infection, preeclampsia and hemorrhage. Logistic regression analysis resulted in 12 variables, including four significant interactions.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Although some limitations, the perspective of routinely using this information system for surveillance of near miss and implementing measures to avoid maternal death is promising.</p

    Sequential Organ Failure Assessment Score for Evaluating Organ Failure and Outcome of Severe Maternal Morbidity in Obstetric Intensive Care

    Objective. To evaluate the performance of Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score in cases of severe maternal morbidity (SMM). Design. Retrospective study of diagnostic validation. Setting. An obstetric intensive care unit (ICU) in Brazil. Population. 673 women with SMM. Main Outcome Measures. mortality and SOFA score. Methods. Organ failure was evaluated according to maximum score for each one of its six components. The total maximum SOFA score was calculated using the poorest result of each component, reflecting the maximum degree of alteration in systemic organ function. Results. highest total maximum SOFA score was associated with mortality, 12.06 ± 5.47 for women who died and 1.87 ± 2.56 for survivors. There was also a significant correlation between the number of failing organs and maternal mortality, ranging from 0.2% (no failure) to 85.7% (≥3 organs). Analysis of the area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC) confirmed the excellent performance of total maximum SOFA score for cases of SMM (AUC = 0.958). Conclusions. Total maximum SOFA score proved to be an effective tool for evaluating severity and estimating prognosis in cases of SMM. Maximum SOFA score may be used to conceptually define and stratify the degree of severity in cases of SMM

    Microencapsulation of Lactobacillus paracasei LAFTI® L26 by extrusion in an alginate matrix

    Probiotic bacteria are currently used in the development of functional food products, yet sometimes face technological challenges when incorporated in food matrices with more aggressive environments – salt, acid or oxygen concentrations. Encapsulation is an efficient technique to overcome such difficulties since encapsulation microcapsules help in their protection from both the product intrinsic properties and the gastrointestinal tract. Among the many factors influencing encapsulation efficiency, capsule size is an important issue since it can affect the textural and sensorial properties of the food product to which they are added. In this research work the microencapsulation efficiency and stability throughout storage of calcium alginate capsules (produced by extrusion) of Lactobacillus paracasei LAFTI® L26 was studied. Initially, extrusion by coaxial flow was used for encapsulation. Storage in Ringer solution at 4 ºC in a 1:9 (g/mL) racio – and the effect of a protecting agent – lactose, were assessed (samples collected at 0, 3, 5, 7 and 14d). In order to reduce the capsules’ size, extrusion by aerodynamically assisted flow was also tested and two different rupture solutions (sodium citrate 2 %(w/v) and phosphate buffer (0.5 M; pH 7)) were assessed. The capsules obtained via extrusion by coaxial flow presented dimensions superior to 200 µm. The incorporation method was shown to be effective. Suspension of the L. paracasei LAFTI® L26 alginate capsules in Ringer solution and storage at 4 ºC was shown to be a good preservation method and lactose did not present a protective effect. Such encapsulation increased survival of bacteria under storage at 4 ºC for two months (samples collected at 0, 3, 5, 7, 14, 21, 30 and 60d), reducing the decline of viable cell numbers when in comparison with free cells (3 log cycles versus 4 log cycles). The size of the capsules obtained using extrusion by aerodynamically assisted flow was smaller than 100 µm which allows the capsules to be incorporated in food products without a negative sensorial perception. The encapsulation method was also shown to be effective and no difference between rupture solutions was observed.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
